Summer is fast approaching and global warming is expected to bring a considerable rise in the heat index over the next few years. A hot summer can make life miserable for city dwellers. That's why Eau de Paris has equipped fifty Wallace fountains with a misting system that cools the air around the fountains and relieves heat stress.
Users can cool off while they get drinking water from the famous fountains. A video demonstrates how it works.

L'été approche à grands pas et le réchauffement climatique devrait entraîner une hausse considérable de la température au cours des années. Un été chaud peut rendre la vie pénible aux citadins. C'est pourquoi Eau de Paris a équipé cinquante fontaines Wallace d'un système de brumisation qui rafraîchit l'air autour de la fontaine et soulage le stress de la chaleur.
Les usagers peuvent ainsi se rafraîchir tout en se procurant de l'eau potable aux célèbres fontaines. Une vidéo montre comment cela fonctionne. La société propose des promenades et des conférences.

The Society of the Wallace Fountains is offering presentations on Richard Wallace or the Wallace Fountains to groups and organizations seeking programs for their membership meetings or special events. Presentations are tailored to the needs and interests of the group.
For those groups looking for an outing, the Society offers a guided walking tour lasting around an hour and a half. During the tour, the fascinating history of the fountains and the meaning of their many symbols are revealed, along with their artistic, cultural, social and philanthropic significance. Participants also discover a part of Paris rarely visited and learn about the history of the area and its points of interest.

La Société des Fontaines Wallace propose des présentations sur Richard Wallace ou les fontaines Wallace à des groupes et des organisations à la recherche de programmes pour leurs réunions de membres ou leurs événements spéciaux. Les présentations sont adaptées aux besoins et aux intérêts du groupe.
Pour les groupes à la recherche d'une sortie, la Société propose une visite guidée à pied d'une durée d'environ une heure et demie. Au cours de la visite, l'histoire fascinante des fontaines et la signification de leurs nombreux symboles sont révélés, ainsi que leur importance artistique, culturelle, sociale et philanthropique. Les participants découvrent également une partie de Paris rarement visitée et apprennent l'histoire du quartier et de ses points d'intérêt.

Boulevard Richard Wallace begins on the border between the town of Neuilly-sur-Seine and the Bois de Boulogne in the 16th arrondissement and is about 530 meters long. The road was named for Wallace by the city of Paris. Across the river and into the city of Puteaux, it continues for almost 800 meters.
In1870-71, during the Franco-Prussian War and the siege of Paris, Wallace gave Puteaux officials 2,000 francs to provide social assistance for those impacted by the war and from 1887, when he was living at Château de Bagatelle, until his death he gave an additional 500 francs each year to aid the needy. His annual gift was continued by his widow, Lady Wallace, until she died in 1897.
When Richard Wallace died in 1890, a grateful community named the main boulevard in Puteaux for him and today two Wallace fountains stand on this boulevard dispensing safe drinking water to thirsty pedestrians. Also located on this boulevard is a modern building named Residence Richard Wallace, a facility providing housing for seniors.
In July 2025, a small square outside the original main entrance to Château de Bagatelle will be named for Lady Wallace in honor of her cultural and humanitarian philanthropy.

Le boulevard Richard Wallace commence à la limite entre la ville de Neuilly-sur-Seine et le bois de Boulogne dans le 16e arrondissement. Il mesure environ 530 mètres de long et a été baptisé du nom de Wallace par la ville de Paris. De l'autre côté du fleuve, dans la ville de Puteaux, il continue sur près de 800 mètres.
En 1870-1871, pendant le siège de Paris, Wallace a donné aux fonctionnaires de Puteaux 2 000 francs pour assurer l'aide sociale aux personnes touchées par la guerre et, à partir de 1887, alors qu'il vivait au château de Bagatelle, jusqu'à sa mort, il a donné 500 francs de plus chaque année pour aider les nécessiteux. Sa veuve, Lady Wallace, a continué à faire ce don annuel jusqu'à sa mort en 1897.
Lorsque Richard Wallace est décédé en 1890, une communauté reconnaissante a baptisé le boulevard principal de Puteaux en son honneur. Aujourd'hui, deux fontaines Wallace se trouvent sur ce boulevard et distribuent de l'eau potable aux piétons assoiffés. Sur ce boulevard se trouve également un bâtiment moderne, la Résidence Richard Wallace, un établissement d'hébergement pour personnes âgées.
En juillet 2025, une petite place située à l'extérieur de l'entrée principale d'origine du Château de Bagatelle sera nommée Lady Wallace en l'honneur de sa philanthropie culturelle et humanitaire.

The four caryatids supporting the dome of the Wallace fountains represent four virtues. The idea was to encourage users of the fountains to adopt these virtues in their own lives. One of the caryatids represents charity. She has her left knee bent forward and her toga draped above the knee.
Providing charity in the form of social and humanitarian aid was important to both Richard Wallace and his wife. When Richard died, Lady Wallace quoted Saint Paul in the formal death notice, “These three remain: faith, hope and charity; but the greatest of these is charity”. She honored his memory by giving a stained glass window to the Lisburn Cathedral in Northern Ireland on the theme of the Good Samaritan with an inscription urging parishioners to ‘Go and do thou likewise’.
Richard Wallace was one of the leading philanthropists of his time, making charity to others a guiding principle in his life.

Les quatre cariatides qui soutiennent le dôme des fontaines Wallace représentent quatre vertus. L'idée était d'encourager les utilisateurs des fontaines à adopter ces vertus dans leur propre vie. L'une des cariatides représente la vertu de charité. Son genou gauche est plié en avant et son genou est découvert par sa toge.

Elle a honoré sa mémoire en offrant un vitrail à la cathédrale de Lisburn, en Irlande du Nord, sur le thème du bon samaritain, avec une inscription exhortant les paroissiens à « aller et faire de même ».
Richard Wallace a été l'un des principaux philanthropes de son époque, faisant de la charité envers les autres un principe directeur de sa vie.

Not all Wallace fountains in Paris are public drinking fountains. There is a Wallace fountain in the courtyard of the British Embassy. At Marché Saint-Quentin, a non-functioning Wallace fountain stands in the center of the covered market. In Levallois-Perret, another Wallace fountain can be found in the courtyard of the historic Hertford British Hospital building, originally founded and built by Richard Wallace in 1879.
A private residential building at 21 Passage Gambetta in the 18th arrondissement is fortunate enough to have a Wallace fountain in its front courtyard. Behind a gate and not accessible to the public, the beautiful fountain is still visible from the street.

The Society of the Wallace Fountains needs volunteers to give talks and guided walking tours. If you are French speaking and would enjoy giving talks and presentations on Richard Wallace and the Wallace Fountains to students, groups and associations in Paris, we can use your help. If you would enjoy conducting Wallace fountain walking tours in French or English for small groups that last approximately an hour and a half, please let us know. Training and materials will be provided.
