The 150th Anniversary of the first Wallace Fountains in Paris occurs in 2022. The Society of the Wallace Fountains is proud to partner with the City of Paris Mayor’s Office in organizing a weekend of city-wide activities to celebrate the fountains and their contribution to Paris life and history. Events will take place on September 24-25, 2022.

The Musée Carnavalet, Eau de Paris, the water company, GHM Sommevoire, the foundry that still makes the fountains and sponsors our website, and the British Embassy are also involved in preparations for the celebration.

La célébration du 150e anniversaire des premières fontaines Wallace à Paris aura lieu en 2022. La Société des Fontaines Wallace est fière de s'associer à la mairie de Paris pour organiser un week-end d'activités pour célébrer l’histoire des fontaines et leur contribution à la vie des Parisiens.

Le musée Carnavalet, Eau de Paris (la compagnie des eaux), GHM Sommevoire (la fonderie qui fabrique toujours les fontaines et qui subventionne notre site internet), ainsi que l'ambassade britannique sont également impliqués dans les préparatifs de la célébration les 24 et 25 septembre 2022.

The Society of the Wallace Fountains is pleased to announce the establishment of the Wallace Fountain Award. Recipients of the award will be individuals recognised for their exceptional generosity who, in the spirit of Sir Richard Wallace, use their personal wealth in partnership with public or non-profit organisations to benefit the common good. Nominations for the award are now being accepted.

Sir Richard’s fountains stand as symbols for the kindness and generosity of a man who was inspired to give back to society what he himself was privileged enough to possess as heir to an unusual fortune and art collection. In many ways the fountains he created and donated, along with his many other good works in Paris and abroad, demonstrate today the extent to which public/private partnerships can alleviate suffering and promote human wellbeing. In this regard, Sir Richard should be considered one of Europe’s first and finest philanthropists.

The Wallace Fountain Award will recognize those kind and generous individuals who are following in his footsteps.

La Société des Fontaines Wallace est heureuse d'annoncer la création du le Prix de la Fontaine Wallace. Les récipiendaires du prix seront des personnes reconnues pour leur générosité exceptionnelle qui, dans l'esprit de Sir Richard Wallace, utilisent leur richesse personnelle en partenariat avec des organisations publiques ou à but non lucratif au profit du bien commun. Les candidatures pour le prix sont maintenant ouvertes.

Les fontaines de Sir Richard symbolisent la générosité d'un homme qui a été inspiré à rendre à la société ce qu'il a lui-même eu le privilège de posséder en tant qu'héritier d'une fortune exceptionnelle et d'une collection d'art. Les fontaines qu'il a fait fabriquées, ainsi que ses nombreuses autres bonnes œuvres à Paris et à l'étranger, démontrent aujourd'hui à quel point les partenariats public/privé peuvent soulager la souffrance et promouvoir le bien-être humain. Sir Richard peut être considéré comme l'un des premiers philanthropes d'Europe.

Le Prix Fontaine Wallace récompensera les personnes généreuses qui suivent ses traces.

The town of Créon (population 4,600) near Bordeaux, France has a Wallace Fountain standing in front of its cultural centre. Details of its acquisition are not clear. It is thought to have been acquired from Bordeaux by Michel BASTIAT when he was mayor of Créon (1959 -1977). It was never installed and disappeared until a teacher, Jean-Marie DARMIAN, who later became mayor (2008-2014), discovered it in an old moat when he was passing nearby with students. Mayor Roger CAUMON (1977-1995) restored the fountain and installed it where it stands today. It was once painted pink but now has returned to its original green. Foundry markings indicate it is an older fountain and therefore could be one of Bordeaux’s originals dating to 1873.

La ville de Créon (4 600 habitants) près de Bordeaux, en France, possède une fontaine Wallace devant son centre culturel. Les détails de son acquisition ne sont pas clairs. Il pourrait avoir été acquis à Bordeaux par Michel BASTIAT lorsqu'il était maire de Créon (1959 -1977). Il n'a jamais été installé et a disparu jusqu'à ce qu'un enseignant, Jean-Marie DARMIAN, devenu par la suite maire (2008-2014), le découvre dans un ancien fossé alors qu'il passait à proximité avec des élèves. Le maire Roger CAUMON (1977-1995) a restauré la fontaine et l'a installée à l'endroit où elle se trouve aujourd'hui. Il était autrefois peint en rose mais est maintenant revenu à son vert d'origine. Les marques de fonderie indiquent qu'il s'agit d'une fontaine plus ancienne et pourrait donc être l'une des originales de Bordeaux datant de 1873.

Wallace Fountains are not exclusive to Paris. There are more than 150 fountains outside the city. Most are located in other parts of France, but many Wallace Fountains can be found all over the world.

The Society of the Wallace Fountains is in the process of verifying locations, obtaining current fountain images and gathering information to develop a comprehensive database. Confirming the existence of each fountain and learning something about its history is a daunting task. We welcome assistance in developing this information base and will gladly credit the source of information and images used.

Les fontaines Wallace ne sont pas exclusives à Paris. Il y a plus de 150 fontaines en dehors de la ville. La plupart sont situées dans d'autres régions en France, mais de nombreuses fontaines Wallace sont trouvées partout dans le monde.

La Société des Fontaines Wallace est en train de vérifier les emplacements et les images des fontaines actuelles et de rassembler des informations pour développer une base de données complète. Confirmer l'existence de chaque fontaine et apprendre quelque chose sur son histoire n’est pas facile. Nous accueillerons donc toute assistance pour le développement de cette base d'informations et créditerons volontiers la source des informations ainsi que les images utilisées.
